Meet Your Ayurvedic Practitioners:
Heather Martz
Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, E-RYT 500, Reiki Master
"Hi, I’m Heather.
I first heard of Ayurveda in 2008 when I was attending my initial Yoga Teacher Training program. The program offered us an opportunity to receive an Ayurvedic consultation during our training for a fee. I was fairly new to yoga and knew nothing of the spiritual side of it (yet) and thought, ah, they are just trying to get more money out of us, so I didn’t sign up.
After seeing all my new friends walking around the ashram with tea kettles and herbal formulas and having great digestion while I ended up gassy and constipated, I severely regretted my decision.
A couple of years later, I found myself in grad school, working full time as a Starbucks store manager, and teaching 13 yoga classes per week. Needless to say, I was stressed! A friend of mine recommended that I go and see an Ayurvedic Practitioner in our area. I went and with some very simple recommendations, she was able to make a huge difference in my stress levels.
My diet changed slightly, I started taking herbs, I gained some knowledge around Self care practices, and I learned how to better care for myself. I continued seeing this practitioner monthly for about 6 months. After every visit I had new tools to support myself with which I still use today. During Covid, the opportunity finally arrived for me to go study Ayurveda myself. I had wanted to study with Dr. Vasant Lad at The Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico for several years, so I did exactly that. I graduated as an Ayurvedic Practitioner in June of 2022."
Heather Byington
Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, RYT-200, Licensed Massage Therapist
"I joke about being a recovering workaholic and Type-A personality, but my lack of work/life balance led me to abandon corporate life and become licensed in several wellness modalities.
Back in 2015 while I was still involved in corporate life, I decided to become a certified personal trainer, first just to keep me motivated to stay fit at 41. I've been interested in health and fitness my whole life, but when I was younger it was more about vanity than longevity. I've played sports since I was young, been a gym member since I was old enough to join, and have been practicing yoga since I was 25.
In 2017 I was plagued by chronic migraines that inspired me to resign from my corporate job in HR and to pursue a slower and more meaningful life. I took a continuing education course on fitness nutrition and worked at the local YMCA as a health coach and personal trainer as well as leading various group exercise classes, and when I realized how prevalent sports injuries and back pain were, even among fitness enthusiasts, I decided to become a licensed massage therapist.
My education in wellness gained pretty rapid momentum; In 2018 I started my massage therapy school, finished that in June of 2019 and passed the licensing exam before leaving for Yoga Teacher Training in Costa Rica in July of 2019. That same year, I enrolled in an online course to become a certified holistic health coach, which I completed in the spring of 2020.
I found Āyurveda through a cookbook in 2018, and while I'm fairly new to the knowledge of this ancient science, it resonated with me in a very profound way. Before I learned about Āyurveda, I had been suffering from severe digestive distress and didn't know why, especially since I ate healthier than most of my peers. I was a vegetarian and ate fresh and clean ingredients, including a lot of salads, which are touted as being very healthy meals. I had just had a colonoscopy to determine what was wrong with me--and according to Western medicine, everything looked fine.
After reading this cookbook, I learned that salads are only a healthy choice if one's constitution can handle them. I realized that as my 45-year-old body and metabolism were changing, my digestive fire could no longer tolerate all the raw foods that I had enjoyed my entire life. I also learned that the solution to my problem was very simple and that I needed to incorporate cooked foods like kitchari into my diet. Once I started following Āyurvedic guidelines, my body responded quickly.
At that point, I could not get enough of this wisdom--I was reading books and listening to podcasts nonstop. Fast forward to July of 2019 in Costa Rica. One of the yoga teachers also taught us about Āyurveda. He was the first Āyurvedic Practitioner I had met in person, so I was eager to have a consultation and find out about my dosha because I had various results from online quizzes. He saw my passion about the vast knowledge of yoga and Āyurveda and recommended that I check out the world-renowned Āyurvedic Institute, where he taught both yoga and Sanskrit.
Before I had even left Costa Rica, I had a deep knowing that I'd be packing up my life in Michigan and moving across the country to become an Āyurvedic Practitioner. I started the program in September of 2020, and I'm currently a NAMA-certified Practitioner, taking a break from the Doctor of Āyurveda path, and have the eventual goal of starting my own practice that will incorporate yoga, massage and Āyurveda."
